March is TB Awareness Month

The goal of TB Awareness Month is to increase awareness of the disease and its effects on world health and to encourage the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis at an early stage. It is a preventable and curable disease, but early diagnosis and treatment are essential for minimising the disease's spread and preventing mortality.

WHAT IS TUBERCULOSIS (TB)?

The infectious disease tuberculosis is caused by bacteria. Most of us are aware that the disease attacks the lungs, but it can also affect virtually every other part of the body. TB is transmitted through the air, typically through coughing and sneezing.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK OF TB?

Anyone can contract tuberculosis. Nevertheless, some individuals are more susceptible to TB than others. The elderly or very young, those with compromised or weakened immune systems (such as HIV-positive individuals), and those who spend extended periods of time in close proximity to TB patients are more susceptible.

In South Africa, tuberculosis (TB) is still a significant concern, but it is curable if treated. As World TB Day approaches, be certain to check back for additional information and resources.
